Out of reminiscences about D.M. Tsyganov

D.M. Tsyganov was born March 12, 1903 in Saratov. He began to study music from childhood mastering at the same time playing the violin and piano, first under the guidance of his father, who was a violinist, and then under J. Hasek. Later, Dmitry arrived in Moscow, entered the Conservatory and immediately and actively joined the creative life of the capital. As solo violinist he performed at many concert stages, created interesting programs, among which there were a huge number of works by N. Paganini. Then a unique event came over in his life - the organization of the quartet, firstly the Moscow Conservatory Quartet, and later - Beethoven Quartet.

The quartet was founded in 1923 by first Soviet graduates of the Moscow Conservatory. The history of the quartet was not quite common. V. Shirinsky wrote his graduation work on composition Quartet № 1. Vasily said: "We met by chance in fact. My friends, graduated from the conservatory a year ago, kindly agreed to help me". The debut was very successful, and members of the State Examination Commission Igumnov and Miaskovsky advised the participants to continue working together. So that student exam was the beginning of a creative way of these "Beethoven-musicians". But Dmitry also continued solo activities. He always gave concerts in Moscow and in Russia, appeared in sonata ensembles with Igumnov, Neuhaus, other prominent artists, and played also with symphony orchestras.

According to the memoirs of his friends-musicians, D.M. Tsyganov was an outstanding performer of many violin concertos, sonatas, pieces of Russian and foreign composers, the first performer and ardent propagandist of many works by Soviet authors. Playing in the quartet Dmitry became the first performer of the majority of their works. He has also performed great services in pedagogical activity, which was connected with the Moscow Conservatory the whole life. Among his students we can name many violinists, who later successfully performed at various concert world stages (V. Malinin, A. Melnikov, R. Sobolewski, R. Nodel, Fedotov, Z. Shihmurzaeva and others).

My personal acquaintance with Dmitri Tsyganov took place in 1949, when I was a pupil of Central Music School. I still remember that I saw a small smiling friendly person who asked me (boy!) with interest about my purposes in life, in music, about the goals and problems.

It immediately amazed me, although I realized everything much later, that D.M. Tsyganov saw his main task in free creative development of artistic and musical individuality of every student. He had the rare gift of a teacher to discover student’s faculties and to develop them. I remember that Dmitry loved the presence of the majority of his students on the lessons. Such creative communication of all students contributed a lot to our perfection and musical growth.
